phinsuct

If you google search "phinsuct", the only result is my blog. Why? Because someone left a comment on my blog that simply said "phinsuct?". Since this is a made up word (I believe it was presented to a friend of mine in CAPTCHA), but it links to my name, I believe it's my responsibility to create a definition for this word, after all, I am a very phinsuct individual.

phinsuct: adj. (fin suhkt) one who is always interested in new things or constantly learning about new things.

Please feel free to start using this word.

  3. As one who considers herself to be phinsuct, I would be interested to learn the lexical origins of the word. According to Wikipedia: "The phin is a type of lute originating in Isan with a pear-shaped body played by mostly Ethnic Laotians in Thailand and Laos, having frets on the neck over which two or three metal strings run, plucked by pick of the right hand while playing." SUCT, on the other hand is a common abbreviation for suction. This leads me to believe that those who are phinsuct also tend to be musically inclined. The consumption of information and absorption of knowledge happen at such a rapid pace that suction was too long of a word to describe it, and so was truncated to further illustrate the point.

  6. I looked around, and I could not find any information that discredited Laura's research ;)

While similar to neophile, the "new thing" does not necessarily need to be novel or unique, but rather new to the individual who is leaning about the subject in question. For example, a neophile might have an affinity towards an independent musician because many have not been exposed them; where as, a phinsuct person would simply enjoy being exposed to a new band, regardless of the band's commercial success.

  8. I think we need to create a word that means defining words that are generated by CAPTCHA.

  9. Captchargon: n. (proper pronunciation pending) A portmanteau word that is a combination of CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) and jargon, it refers to a word that has been created (and further defined and used in oral and written conversation) due to the necessity of a person typing in the characters of that "word" into a CAPTCHA. Ex: "Phinsuct" is the first known captchargon.
